5 strings, 1 love - St. Louis
This city of brick is famous for its three Bs:
BEER
The Anheuser-Busch brewery tour an exercise in aggressive, up-close branding.
Did you know that all A-B beers are made with freshness and quality in mind? So Rebecca and Dave would have us believe. They're the spokesactors in the video that talks about the amazing quality and freshness of Budweiser's packaging. The video is projected on a TV screen the size of a squash court.
But A-B earns its big bold talk.
A case in point: Spent barley from brewing Budweiser products feeds 4% of America's livestock.
I also saw a machine that can fill 2000 cans of Bud Light in a minute. The device is about the size of a merry-go-round and turns at the same stately pace. But when you look at the cans up close, they whiz by at an alarming pace.
Other impressions: 1. The Anheuser-Busch corporation is rich beyond all comprehension. 2. The A-B company has invested a pretty penny in fine brickwork over the years.
3. And finally, contrary to my preconceptions, A-B makes some tasty beers, including a toasted stout and an organic pale ale.
BOWLING
The International Bowling Museum is an institution designed by bowling geeks. I did learn a great deal about bowling history, but the endless trophies and hall-of-fame portraits wore me out.
The best part was the 10-pin showdown on the lanes in the basement.
BASEBALL
We saw Cardinal stadium, but we ignored the Cardinal Hall of Fame (tucked in a corner of the Bowling Museum). Instead, we concentrated on:
BURGERS
The Eat-rite offers 6 burgers for $4.80. We took it easy:
And gorged on diner atmosphere:
St. Louis: We ate, we drank, we bowled.
Kansas City: Here we come.
